Agentic Software Engineering
Agentic software engineering is an approach to building and maintaining software where autonomous agents perform planning, decision making, and actions on behalf of people. These agents are small programs or systems that can set goals, break those goals into steps, execute tasks like writing or testing code, and monitor the results. The idea is that a lot of routine and structured work in software projects can be handled by these autonomous systems with minimal human intervention. This matters because it can speed up development, reduce repetitive manual work, and allow human engineers to focus on higher‑level design and problem solving. Agentic systems can handle tasks such as generating code snippets, running test suites, deploying services, and fixing simple bugs automatically. At the same time, they introduce new concerns about reliability, safety, and accountability because the agents make decisions that affect live systems. Human oversight remains important to verify outputs, manage unexpected outcomes, and set ethical or safety constraints. As these practices become more common, teams need new processes for testing, monitoring, and auditing what the agents do. Properly used, agentic software engineering can raise productivity and consistency, but it also requires careful design to avoid mistakes and ensure predictable behavior.
