AI memory refers to the ways an artificial intelligence system keeps and uses information about past interactions, user preferences, and context so it can behave more consistently over time. Instead of treating each interaction as brand new, an AI with memory can remember things you told it earlier, like project details, preferred style, or ongoing tasks, and use that information to provide more relevant and helpful responses. Memory can be short-term — keeping context within a single conversation — or long-term, storing facts and patterns across sessions to personalize experiences. This capability makes AI assistants feel more natural and efficient because they avoid repeating questions and can pick up where you left off. At the same time, storing personal information raises important privacy and security questions, so good systems give people control over what is remembered, how long it is kept, and how it can be deleted. Designers must balance usefulness with transparency and consent to prevent unwanted data retention or biased behavior. When done responsibly, AI memory improves productivity, saves time, and creates smoother interactions. When mishandled, it can erode trust, so clear policies and safeguards are essential.
